Jack Krier NYWA State Champ; Sam Moore 3rd; K-6 Team Finishes 11th

The NYWA State Tournament was held last weekend at the Mayo Civic Center.  Jack Krier was able to bring home the gold at 65 pounds for 5th & 6th grade.  Sam Moore finished 3rd at 1st & 2nd grade 50.  Individuals that also qualified for the state tournament were Owen Lexvold, Brody Lohmann, Gunner Mancilman, Cody Anderson, Isaiah O’Reilly, Lucas Schiell, Nathan Haltom, and Jack Smothers.

The K-6 team went 3-2 finishing 11th out of 32 teams.  The team opened the tournament with a win over New London-Spicer, followed by a loss to eventual tournament champion Wayzata.  The Cougars bounced back with a win over MAHACA to take 3rd in the 8 team  pool.  In Pool 3, the Cougars lost a close dual to Bemidji but finished the tournament with a win over Kasson-Mantorville.

The youth wrestling program will celebrate our season with a party on Friday, April 7th at 6 PM at the school.  See you there!

3 ZM Wrestlers Place at MN/USA Cadet and Junior State Folkstyle

6 ZM wrestlers competed in the MN/USA Cadet and Junior State Folkstyle Tournament in Anoka on Saturday.  Luke Tupper was runner-up at Junior 152, Sam Nordquist placed 4th at Junior 170, and Michael Majerus earned 5th at Cadet 106.  Also competing were Tyler Soltau, Jack Haglund, and Cole Poncelet.

5 ZM Wrestlers Place at MN/USA State Tournament

Over 1,500 wrestlers took part in the MN/USA Kids State Folkstyle Tournament over the weekend in Rochester.  5 ZM wrestlers were able to claw their way through the large brackets and earn a spot on the podium.  Owen and Ryan Lexvold led the way each earning runner-up.  Sam Moore was able to bring home the bronze medal.  Isaiah O’Reilly and Ethan Kovars both placed 6th.  Also competing were Cain Lexvold and Brennan Sheda.  Congratulations boys!

Youth Jr. Team Runners-Up; Sr. Team 5th in St. Charles

Two ZM youth wrestling teams took part in the St. Charles dual tournament on Saturday.  The Junior team (K-3rd grade) earned 2nd place with wins over St. Charles and Rochester Mayo while falling short in the championship to KW.

The Senior team (4th-6th grade) earned 5th place, falling in the first round to Chatfield but finished with 2 wins over Goodhue and Rochester Mayo.

Our youth Wrestlers of the Week are Jacoby and Rylan Brown, Jent Beyer, and Isaiah O’Reilly.  Rylan is in PreK and Jacoby is a kindergartner, both are sons of Tony and Deanne.  Jent is in 3rd grade and son of Seth and Tracey.  Isaiah is a 6th grader and son of Shanon and Kelly.  Great job boys!

Youth Team Takes 4th in Kasson; Our Youth WOTW

The youth team competed in Kasson on Sunday going 3-2 to earn 4th place out of 16 teams.  The wrestlers were able to top Chatfield, Ellsworth, and Caledonia while falling to Dover-Eyota and GMLOS.  Lots of close matches and duals all day!

The Cougars were runners-up in a very tough 24-team tourney Saturday…it was neck and neck with Ellsworth, WI throughout the day but the Cougars came up a few points short.

ZM had two champions, Caden Steffen (182) and Jarret Haglund (220). Maverick Jackson, Hayden Voxland, and Jacob Bennett took home silver medals. Other Cougar place winners were Michael Majerus (10th), John Poulin (7th), Conner Heitman (3rd), Mike Vath (7th), Spencer DeFrang (4th), Hayden Stensland (4th), Luke Tupper (5th), and Sam Nordquist (4th). Caden Steffen was awarded Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
