Free Youth Wrestling Clinic and Registration Monday, November 4

The youth wrestling season (PreK-6th grade) will be starting soon and we’d like you to join us!  We hope to relay this information to as many ZM parents and youth as we can.  Please help us out by sharing!

New to wrestling or looking to try it again?  We are offering a free clinic on Monday, November 4th at 6:00 PM in the Mazeppa school wrestling room.  This practice provides the opportunity to learn more about the sport without any commitment.  See this flyer for more details.

Registration is Monday, November 4th at 7:00 PM in Mazeppa school large gym.  We’ll cover practice schedule, important dates, opportunity to try on singlets, and other essential information.  You can get a head start and download the registration form and bring it with you on the 4th.

Don’t forget to bring your unwanted wrestling gear to registration.  Be sure to mark it with your name and asking price.

Former Cougars Set for College Season

Six former Cougar wrestlers will be competing collegiately this 2019-2020 season.

Luke Dahlen, Jarret Haglund, Caden Steffen, and Hayden Voxland are all in their second year of college competition. Sam Nordquist and Tyler Soltau are starting their rookie seasons. Best of luck to all these young men this year! You guys continue to make the ZM community proud!

Youth 5002 Club Starts Monday

Can you hear that, brother?  It’s the sound of all the little Cougar-maniacs getting ready for the 5002 Club.  Take your vitamins, say your prayers, do the 5002 Club, and you will never go wrong.  Start building your own 24-inch pythons!

Owen Lexvold Greco-Roman National Champ! Maxwell Ramer 8th in Freestyle

Owen Lexvold and Maxwell Ramer have been active in the Olympic styles of wrestling this spring and summer.  Owen participated in the MN/USA Freestyle and Greco State Tournament in May.  He completed the MN/USA Triple Crown by winning Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco-Roman state titles.

The following week both Owen and Maxwell wrestled in the Northern Plains Regional Championships where wrestlers from 7 states come to compete.  Owen placed 1st in both styles, and Maxwell placed 2nd in Greco (did not compete in Freestyle).

Last week the boys traveled to Wisconsin Dells to participate in the Kids Freestyle and Greco Nationals.  Owen was able to come out on top in Greco-Roman and place 4th in Freestyle.  Maxwell didn’t place in Greco but finished 8th in Freestyle.

We are very proud of these boys!

ZM Wrestling Camp: June 3-6, 2019

The ZM Cougars will host their annual wrestling camp next week in Mazeppa.  ZM students in grades K – 12 (2018-2019) are encouraged to participate. Please contact Link Steffen with any questions about camp @ 507-358-1344.

ZM Wrestling Alumni Thriving at Next Level

Our former ZM wrestlers are thriving at the next level! 

Congratulations to Luke Dahlen for receiving the ‘Purple-Heart’ award at Augustana’s wrestling banquet last weekend!  The Purple-Heart Award goes to a wrestler who never gives up, never complains, works hard, and pours his heart into the wrestling program!  Congratulations, Luke!ZMluke

 

Congratulations to Hayden Voxland for being voted by his teammates as SMSU Wrestling Captain for the 2019-2020 season!  Hayden’s relentless wrestling style and hard work ethic made him an obvious choice to be voted as captain!  Maybe most impressive is next year will only be Hayden’s 2nd year at SMSU!  Congratulations Hayden…what an accomplishment! ZMvoxy

 

Congratulations to Caden Steffen for earning the Freshman Academic Award with a 3.6 GPA his first year at the University of Minnesota!  As his dad, I know Caden worked as hard on his academics as he did his wrestling skills and it paid off! Way to go Caden, I hope your message that academics are more important than wrestling reaches all our younger ZM wrestlers!  Proud of you!ZMcaden

Maxwell Ramer NYWA State Champ! 7 More Reach Podium

Another great weekend for ZM Wrestling!  8 wrestlers placed individually at the NYWA State Tournament, and both the K-6th and 7-8th grade teams went 2-3 being competitive in all their duals.  Individual results were:

  • Maxwell Ramer, State Champ, 3rd & 4th 85#.  Also named Outstanding Wrestler for 3rd & 4th grade.
  • Samuel Moore, 3rd place, 3rd & 4th 60#
  • Owen Lexvold, 3rd place, 3rd & 4th 90#
  • Carl Murray, 4th place, 3rd & 4th 65#
  • Jacob Matthees, 5th place, Kindergarten 60#

2 Teams and 14 Individuals Advance to NYWA State

The K-6th and 7-8th grade teams both qualified for the NYWA State Tournament.  The K-6th team finished 4-1 placing 5th at the NYWA Region 1 Qualifier in Eyota last weekend.  The boys were able to top GMLOS, Dover-Eyota, Caledonia, and Westfield while falling to Northfield.  14 individuals also advanced to the state tournament.  They are: Ben Murray, Brody Lohmann, Carl Murray, Isaiah O’Reilly, Jack Krier, Jacob Matthees, Lucas Schiell, Maxwell Ramer, Myles Ramer, Owen Lexvold, Ryan Stimets, Samuel Moore, Tanner Finstuen, and Wilson Nordquist.  The NYWA State Tournament will be April 4-7 at Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.
