Owen Lexvold Gopher State Nationals Champ! JV 2nd in HVL

6 ZM wrestlers made the journey to Monticello this weekend for the Gopher State Nationals tournament to take on some of the best wrestlers in the Midwest and did very well.  Owen Lexvold was able to win the championship.  Ryan Lexvold earned runner-up honors.  Kaleb Lochner battled to a 6th place finish.  Ben Murray was 1 win shy of placing in his bracket.  Cain Lexvold was 1-2 and Jack Krier unfortunately had to injury default, but will be back at it soon.

The JV took 2nd place in the HVL JV Tournament Saturday in Goodhue.  The team scored 193 just behind Kasson-Mantorville’s 213.  Coach Stensland said “they wrestled well and (the coaches) are very proud of their improvement over the year.”

Wrestlers in the news: Congrats to Luke Tupper for committing to wrestle for Concordia in Moorhead in 2018-2019!  PAW award winners were Kale Johnson, Tadam Kahl, and Ashtin Garcia.  Student of the Month winner was Braxton Mehrkens.

Our youth wrestlers of the week are Patrick Fruth, Evan Blanck, Chase Dohrn, and Cain Lexvold.  Patrick is in PreK and son of Brian and Kristin.  Evan is a kindergartner and son of Brian Blanck.  Chase is in 3rd grade and son of Perry and Carrie.  Cain is a 4th grader and son of Chris and Lacey.

Youth Jr. Team Earns Championship; Sr. Team 4th in St. Charles

Two ZM youth wrestling teams took part in the St. Charles dual tournament on Saturday.  The Junior team (K-3rd grade) earned 1st place with wins over KW, PEM, and Chatfield.

The Senior team (4th-6th grade) earned 4th place, opening with a win over PEM then falling to KW and KM.

Our youth Wrestlers of the Week are Carl Murray and Jack Krier. Carl is in 3rd grade and son of Matt and Martha.  Jack is a 6th grader and son of Mark and Sara. (My apologies to the PreK-K WOTW, I’ll get you next week!)

Youth Team Goes 4-1; Matthees, Mehrkens, Lochner are WOTW

The youth team competed in Kasson today going 4-1 to earn 5th place out of 16 teams.  The wrestlers were able to top KM White, GMLOS, Northfield, and Dover-Eyota while falling to Chatfield.Our youth wrestlers of the week are Jacob Matthees, Braxton Mehrkens, and Kaleb Lochner. Jacob is in PreK and son of Jeff and Michelle.  Braxton is in 3rd grade and son of Kyle and Amber.  Kaleb is in 6th grade and son of Ben and Jessica. Great job boys!

Thank you ZM Wrestling family for helping make our home tournaments a success this weekend!  354 elementary wrestlers participated on Friday night and were done by 9:30.

Congrats to senior Sam Nordquist for his 100th career win on Saturday! Youth wrestlers earning Cougar PAW Awards this week (Practice kindness, Act with respect, Work to do you best) were Luke Mulholland and Peter Klapperich.

Our youth wrestlers of the week are Bo Diercks, Conner Dodd, and Jent Beyer. Owen is in PreK and son of Matthew and Kelly.  Conner is in 1st grade and son of Matt and Jen. Jent is in 4th grade and son of Seth and Tracey.

A group of wrestlers headed to the “Bring-One-Bring-All” team tournament in Farmington today.  Great matches were wrestled- some experienced their first team tournament, others wrestled in their first tournament ever!  They all got better today.  Thanks to all the coaches and parents for making this day a success!

Earning recognition in the classroom this week by receiving PAW awards were Braylen DeFrang, Jasper Lohmann, and Mason Mahoney.  Keep it up gentlemen!

Youth Team Finishes 4-1; Poncelet, Ryan, and Mancilman WOTW

The youth team competed in Cannon Falls today going 4-1. The wrestlers were able to top Lakeville, Shakopee, St. Michael-Albertville, and Caledonia while falling to Hastings. Great start to our dual meet season!

Our youth wrestlers of the week are Tanner Poncelet, James Ryan, and Gunner Mancilman. Tanner is in PreK and son of PJ and Chalsie. James is in kindergarten and son of Jason and Christina. Gunner is in 4th grade and son of John and Becky. James and Gunner both had the chance to represent the team in Cannon Falls and had some big wins!

Mahoney, Postma, Olson are WOTW

Our youth wrestlers of the week are Mason Mahoney, Erik Postma, and Mitchell Olson.  Mason is in kindergarten and son of Michael and Amber.  Erik is a 1st grader, son of Chris and Carla.  Mitchell is in 4th grade and son to Mike and Joey.  Keep up the good work!

 

Youth parents and wrestlers:  We will be having an intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday, January 11th while the JV wrestles Goodhue.  You can sign your wrestler up on the sheets in or near the wrestling rooms.  Additional details will be available at practice.

Garcia, Lexvold, and Nordquist are WOTW

It was a busy weekend for ZM Wrestling.  The varsity competed in the tough Minnesota Christmas Tournament finishing 17th out of 39 teams.  Caden Steffen (2nd), Michael Majerus (5th), Jacob Bennett (5th), and Jarrett Haglund (6th) all reached the podium.  The JH/JV got up extra early and traveled to Caledonia on Saturday.  Several wrestlers were able to earn the top prize in their bracket.  18 youth wrestlers competed in Goodhue on Saturday.  Coach Lexvold was very impressed with the toughness and performance of our little wrestlers in the first tournament of the year for many.

Thursday, December 21 will be the Cougars first home dual meet in Mazeppa against Lake City.  The 5002 Club will be recognized between the JV and varsity duals.  The ZM Wrestling Booster Club is looking for volunteers to work concessions during our home high school matches.  If you can lend a hand, please sign-up here.  We need 1 more volunteer for Thursday night.  Thanks in advance!

Our week #1 youth Wrestlers of the Week (WOTW) are Austin Garcia, Tayte Lexvold, and Wilson Nordquist.  Austin is a kindergartner and son of Antonio and Amber.  Tayte is in 2nd grade, son of Craig and Diane.  Wilson is in 5th grade, son  of Luke and Pattie.

Wrestlers who made the News-Record this week for their work inside the classroom include: Colton Stevenson (Student of the Month), Creston Grobe (PAW Award), and Jacoby Brown (PAW Award).

Finally, Sammy Moore was in the latest edition of USA Wrestler magazine in the Photo Contest.  Congrats to all our wrestlers!

Youth Practice Starts Monday

The youth wrestling season officially kicks off tomorrow night!  Grades PreK and K start at 5:45 PM in the old wrestling room in Mazeppa.  Grades 1st through 3rd at 5:45 PM in the new wrestling room, followed by grades 4th through 6th at 6:45 PM.  A reminder that their fingernails should be trimmed and to carry in the shoes they will wear during practice.  Please wear shorts and t-shirts without buttons or zippers.  We welcome parent help during practices.  Not registered yet or want more information?  E-mail youthcoordinator@zmwrestling.com.

The youth singlets, warm-ups, and t-shirts are in.  PreK-3 should pick them up following their practice, and 4th-6th should pick them up before practice.

Joey Majerus led a preseason youth practice again last Monday.  Joey selected Leo Beyer as the Wrestler of the Week.  Leo is in 3rd grade and son of Seth and Tracey.  Thanks for your help Joey and congratulations Leo!

A reminder if your child earns Wrestler of the Week to please return the belt the following week so we can recognize the next winner.
